Book of the Month
- Written by SRI Member
`
Incident at Latitude 25 North is the first
installment of the Pelagia Trilogy, a series about the environment.
McClendon Park, an environmental entrepreneur, becomes involved with
BIO, a marine research organization. Park’s attempts to foster
shark conservation and stop gold mining are at odds with the interests
of Senator C.B. Rite, a powerful, staunch anti-environmentalist. |
The situation culminates when a yacht carrying
the senator and four representatives of the Japanese fishing industry
is commandeered on its way from Panama City, Florida, to Key West.
Political intrigue, revenge, and a disturbing act of eco-terrorism
hammer home demands to save the environment. |

A diver of legendary skill, a filmmaker, an explorer, a poet, and
an observer of the world in which he has had both adventure and
challenge, Sea Salt: Memories And Essays is a compendium of Stan
Waterman's personal stories and experiences ranging from the destruction
of his home on the coast of Maine by fire in 1994, through his discoveries
of treasures and artifacts from beneath the sea and travels around
the world, to his encounters on the Aegean Sea, the Amazon, Polynesia,
the Solomon Islands, Aldabra, Cocos Keeling and the Turks. That's
just the first half of his memoirs. The second half is a collection
of his writings primarily drawn from his contribution to "Ocean
Realm" magazine in the 1990s where he encountered whale sharks
in Australia, sea creatures in the Caribbean, and stories from his
various expeditions around the globe. Part travelogue, part autobiography,
Sea Salt: memories And Essays is especially welcome reading for
the armchair traveler during those long cold winter nights at home.

Shark Trouble In
"Shark Trouble," Peter Benchley tells true stories about
his own adventures with sharks, offers a guide on how to read the
behavior of marine life, and what to do in dangerous situations. Back
in 1974, Benchley wrote a best-selling novel: "Jaws". When
Stephen Spielberg made the book into a film so little was known about
sharks that few people were able to separate fact from fiction and
so it created an unnecessary fear of shark . For more than three decades,
Benchley has studied sharks as an ocean conservationist, and he is
a staunch supporter of SRI. |

Devil's Teeth
In a post-Jaws/Discovery Channel world, unearthing
fresh data on great white sharks is a feat. So credit Susan Casey
not just with finding and spotlighting two biologists who have done
truly pioneering field research on the beasts but also with following
them and their subjects into the heart of one... |

Great
White Shark McCosker & Ellis
give the white shark soup-to-nuts coverage, discussing its unique
biology, size, distribution, and evolution. They also describe the
sport of shark fishing and the efforts, in these conservation conscious
times, toward saving the white from threats of extinction. Handsomely
illustrated with Ellis's paintings and many simply awesome photographs
(happily none of half-eaten attack victims), the text has enough scientific
fact for armchair icthyologists but not enough to confuse the casual
reader. - Michael Rogers, "Library Journal" |

Great
White Sharks The Biology of
Carcharadon carcharias
"The authors have accomplished the difficult talk of writing
a serious scientific work representing our current state of knowledge
regarding this great beast and making it interesting, informative,
and understandable to the lay public. It would be a welcome addition
to any ocean enthusiast's library."

Sharks In Question
Traditionally, most books on sharks have been organized family by
family, making it difficult for the general reader to get an overall
picture of what is known of shark habits and behavior. This book presents
research and information in a more readable, accessible fashion. The
photographs are unusually good, including clear pictures of embryo
sharks and species rarely seen. A valuable addition to public and
academic libraries.

Sharks
of North American Waters If you
love your sharks, this is the book you need to get. It has a well-written
introduction, a very nice classification system to help you identify
that shark you saw last week while diving, and in-depth descriptions
of just about every shark prevalent in these waters. |

This is a terrific book! It
tells you how important great white sharks are to the health of
the ocean ecosystem. It gives results of current research that is
not available elsewhere except in scientific journals. Topics also
include myths about great white sharks, shark attacks and what to
do if a shark bites you, sharks in history, and how the numbers
of white sharks have declined throughout the world in recent years.
This is a MUST READ for all shark lovers!

Twelve Days of Terror
In July 1916, a time of record-setting heat and a raging polio epidemic,
beachgoers along the New Jersey shore confronted a greater terror
still: lurking in the water swam a shark, or perhaps several sharks,
that had apparently developed a taste for human flesh. Within less
than two weeks, the offending fish killed four swimmers and badly
injured another, setting off a wave of panic that kept visitors well
out of the water and threatened the state's thriving tourist economy. |
