The Oregon Senate unanimously approved a measure that bans the sale of shark fins used in sharkfin soup.
The measure specifically prohibits "possessing, selling, offering for sale, trading or distributing" shark fins.
It makes an exception for spiny dogfish, a small shark that accounts for 300,000 pounds in landings by commercial fishermen each year. Sport fishermen with a valid license are not affected.
The bill also unanimously passed the House and now heads to the governor for signature or veto.

The state of Washington bans sale, trade of shark fins
On May 12, 2011, Governor. Chris Gregoire signed legislation making the sale, trade or distribution of shark fins or derivative products in the state of Washington a felony.
Washinton State Senator Kevin Ranker of San Juan Island was the primary sponsor of Senate Bill 5688. Describing the brutal practice of finning sharks, Ranker said, “you literally cut off the fins of the shark and throw the mutilated animal back into the sea where it dies slowly and very painfully."
Hawaii, Guam and CNMI have passed similar legislation. Similar measures are being considered in Oregon and California.
Shark fins are used to make shark fin soup, a dish considered a status symbol in some Asian countries. More than 73 million sharks are killed each year primarily for their fins.
